The Venetian Carnival, along with the Rio Carnival in Brazil and the Nice Carnival in France, is renowned as one of the “Three Greatest Carnivals in the World.” It is one of the oldest and largest carnivals in the world today.
Lasting for over two weeks, the carnival is not just about elaborate parades and photo opportunities. Starting from the opening day, a myriad of events of all sizes span the entire festival. From grand boat parades to extravagant costume contests, and even some religious-related activities, there’s something for everyone in Venice, all free to participate. The main locations of the carnival are the Piazza San Marco and the Grand Canal.
Every year, twelve beautiful “Marys” take center stage during the carnival. They participate in various activities, with the traditional “Festa delle Marie” procession starting from the Castello district, passing through Garibaldi, along the Riva degli Schiavoni, and ending at Piazza San Marco. Becoming a “Maria” is every Venetian girl’s dream.
However, the most significant feature of the Venetian Carnival is its masks, followed closely by its sumptuous costumes.
Venetian mask art is unique in European civilization; it’s not just a decoration but also a cultural symbol and representation, embodying the spirit of the Venetian people. Masks come in various shapes, each with its own unique style and characteristics. Some are even bizarre faces with beak-like noses, adorned with vibrant colors and splendid decorations. Traditional Venetian masks can be made of leather, porcelain, or glass craftsmanship. Nowadays, most Italian masks are made of plaster covered with gold leaf, embellished with feathers and jewels, and hand-painted.
This 18-day-long carnival offers numerous participatory activities. In addition to masks, consider renting a set of gorgeous costumes, completely transforming into another identity and enjoying the watery city to the fullest.
Donning an exquisite mask, wearing magnificent attire, and strolling over Venice’s numerous water bridges alongside locals and travelers from all over the world, making friends in fluent English or Italian, this is perhaps the true essence of Venice!
